LGBT YOUTH - DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender

LGBT Youth Scotland

Hey there!

We're LGBT Youth Dumfries and Galloway, for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people under 26 from all across the region.

There are lots of things you can get involved in, so why not read on to find out more – it's time you got OUT more!!

News just in!!!

Dumfries and Galloway Council have just launched a brand new Diversity Mini-Web which just gives you lots of useful info about different equality issues in the region (like race, gender, sexual orientation, religion/belief and disability) To find out more, visit the website here

We are open most days from 9am-5pm, so you can just pop in for some info or to make an appointment. The Drop-in is now open on a Thursday afternoon from 3pm-5pm, so if you're in town why not drop in and say Hi!

So now you know a bit about us, that only leaves it up to you to get in touch.

Drop-in

We have just moved into our shiny new LGBT Centre at 26 Brewery Street in Dumfries (next to the White Hart Pub, just off the River). In it are our offices, a wee meeting room and a kitchen with some nice IKEA sofas …

Events

If you want to meet other LGBT people, why not come along to one of our groups or events?
Phoenix LGBT Youth in Dumfries now meets EVERY Tuesday night from 7-9pm.

For folk under 26, Phoenix LGBT Youth is based within our new LGBT Centre. We do a whole range of activities, from cinema or DVD nights to quad biking, workshops on trash drumming or self-esteem to trips to Glasgow and Edinburgh. It's usually a pretty busy programme so check the events section for details.

Q20

If this doesn't sound like your thing, then come along to Q20. We have just launched this group for people aged 21-29. The group meets at the LGBT Centre on Wednesday nights from 7-9pm. It's early days (but we've got 8 members already) so we are looking for people to come along and give us their ideas about what they want, maybe volunteer, but most importantly pop in and meet like-minded people.

Mixed Bag

For those of you aged 18 to 80 and beyond, we organise a club night for LGBT folk and their mates called Mixed Bag. On the last Friday of the month, from 8 till late, Mixed Bag is a great place to meet new people and dance yer socks off!!! For more info, visit myspace.com/mixed_bag_dg

Beyond Dumfries

If you are from way out east or west, and you can't make it in to Dumfries, never fear – we plan to do more work from Langholm right over to Stranraer...

We need to hear what you're looking for though, so get in touch and one of our workers (and if you like some group members) will come out to visit you.

If you need a wee bit of advice and support you can access our workers for a 1-2-1 session.
If you're having problems with coming out, parents, school, health or anything else, one of our trained staff will be happy to chat over issues with you and help you work out what to do for the best. We also have a whole range of useful info and resources such as books, leaflets and videos which may help. For an appointment, call us or drop us an e-mail and we will arrange a suitable time.

You can also text us or e-mail us at the number/address below if you have any questions and we will try our best to answer them!

Volunteer

So you want to get more involved ... why not volunteer?

In partnership with the Youth Enquiry Service in Dumfries, we will be offering a range of volunteering opportunities for LGBT young people which could include befriending, running events, writing a newsletter, updating the website, becoming a youth rep, peer education and running the group.

Whatever you’re interested in, we will try to set you up with a volunteer opportunity that fits. We will also give you training & support to help you carry out your role, and will link you to accredited schemes like Youth Achievement Awards so that you can also get something for your CV.

The volunteer programme runs on a Tuesday from 4pm-6pm at the YES and also during the drop-in time in the LGBT Centre. Just get in touch to find out more.

Dumfries Online

We know not everyone can make it into Dumfries, or maybe you just don't have the confidence right now to come along and meet folk. The Internet is a very easy way to connect, meet and get more information, so we’ve created several online spaces for you to meet other folk, and get a bit of advice, support, or just random chat.

Check them out at:

or visit the Forum section of the lgbtyouth.org.uk site.

We also have Internet outreach workers who are online every Wednesday night from 7-9pm. If you wanna chat over the net with them, give them a shout at DandG@lgbtyouth.org.uk and swap contact info.

Who are We?

LGBT Youth D&G is staffed by a great team of professionals:

group

Grace is our project co-ordinator who manages the project and makes sure everything is running smoothly. She is mainly responsible for working with other organisations and the community to make sure that LGBT people are treated equally in D&G, and will make sure that the LGBT Youth Charter of Rights is rolled out across the region. If you have any questions, then you can contact Grace directly as she will have a pretty good overview of where everything is at.

Michael is our Youth & Community Development Officer for D&G and this means he looks after all of our opportunities for young people, along with Gary, our Project Scotland Volunteer and Youth Worker. Carol is our administration worker, who makes sure everything is running smoothly. We also have Christine, a volunteer from the Grow Your Own Project in North West Dumfries who has started doing work with the adults in Dumfries and Galloway. If you want to pop along or give us a call for a chat then don't hesitate. We're always happy to get your call.

Sam and Draiven are your reps on the National LGBT Youth Council. They are both champing at the bit to make sure your opinions and views are fed back to people who really can make difference, whether that be NHS D&G, D&G Council, local MSPs, the Scottish Youth Parliament or the 1st Minster himself! So if you have a burning issue, get it off your chest and contact your youth reps. We also have space for another 2 youth reps, so if you want to get involved and have your say, just get in touch with us now.
