NATIONAL SCHIZOPHRENIA FELLOWSHIP (SCOTLAND)

NSF (Scotland) are currently introducing a new project which aims to address the emotional and mental health of young people in the Stranraer area. This will be done by promoting and developing an early intervention mental health and well-being programme.

It will do this by:

  • Enabling young people to access the information they require on mental health and well-being
  • Ensuring the involvement of young people as key participants in the development of the project
  • Developing peer support approaches in a young person's support group

Local Issues

Youth workers have identified a range of issues that young people approach them about - bullying, worries about appearance, exam stress, peer pressures, relationships with friends, family issues and various other problems that cause worry and upset. Many of the young people need a 'listening ear' rather than any specific medical or counselling intervention.

Why Should You Get Involved?

NSF (Scotland) are currently looking for young people to form a core group which will deliver the project to 1st and 4th year pupils. Ideally we would be looking for those entering final years of secondary school or attending further education.

Potential benefits of being part of the core group include:
  • Increased self confidence and responsibility
  • Training : Developing good communication skills
  • Opportunity to act as part of a social group
  • Experience of an element of 'Citizenship'
  • Opportunity to gain hands on experience which may be relevant to their future careers

Into The Future!

Although at the moment the project is solely concerned with enabling young people to access information about mental health issues and improve understanding, it is hoped to eventually offer a service to young people via peer support groups.

Potential benefits of being part of the peer support group include:
  • Someone to talk to and listen
  • Help with resolving problems
  • Being able to open up and confide
  • Support from peers
  • Knowledge that they are not alone with their problems
